NRC NAMES NEW RESIDENT INSPECTOR AT BEAVER VALLEY NUCLEAR PLANT
Printable Version PDF Icon

Nuclear Regulatory officials in King of Prussia, Pa., have selected Galen Smith as a resident inspector at the Beaver Valley nuclear power plant. He joins Senior Resident Inspector David Kern at the two-reactor site in Shippingport, Pa.

Smith replaces Geoff Wertz who was promoted to the NRC senior resident inspector position at the BWX Technologies nuclear fuel plant in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Each U.S. commercial nuclear plant has at least two NRC resident inspectors. They serve as the agency's eyes and ears at the facility, conducting inspections, monitoring major work projects and interfacing with plant workers and the public.

Smith was hired by the NRC in 2001 as a project engineer in the Region I Division of Reactor Projects. Prior to joining the agency, he worked as an operations manager for Lucent Technologies and as a control room supervisor for Florida Power and Light's St. Lucie plant, where he held a senior reactor operator license. He also served as a submarine officer in the United States Navy. Smith is a licensed professional engineer in Florida.

Smith earned a master of engineering degree in electrical engineering from the University of South Florida and a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Duke University.

Smith, his wife and three daughters live in the Pittsburgh area.

The resident inspectors at Beaver Valley can be reached at (724) 643-2000.
