NRC, DOMINION NUCLEAR TO DISCUSS INSPECTIONS
ON MILLSTONE LICENSE RENEWAL ON OCTOBER 20TH
Printable Version PDF Icon

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will meet with Dominion Nuclear officials on Wednesday, October 20, to discuss the results of the NRC’s inspections related to the license renewal application for Millstone Station. The facility is located in Waterford, Conn.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Waterford Town Hall, 15 Rope Ferry Road in Waterford. Members of the public are invited to observe and will have an opportunity to ask NRC officials questions before the meeting is adjourned.

A "scoping and screening" inspection was conducted to verify that the company's license renewal program is implemented consistent with its application and pertinent regulations. A second inspection was conducted to verify that programs are or will be in place to manage the material conditions of the systems, structures and components.

Under NRC regulations, the original operating license for a nuclear power plant has a term of 40 years. The license may be renewed for up to an additional 20 years if NRC requirements are met. The current operating license for Millstone 2 is due to expire on July 31, 2015, while the current operating license for Millstone 3 is scheduled to terminate on November 25, 2025. (Millstone Unit 1 has been permanently shut down since July 1998 and the company is not seeking to renew its license.)

Dominion submitted its license renewal application on January 22 of this year. One important aspect of the NRC license renewal process is to ensure that a plant manages the effects of aging equipment through an effective monitoring and maintenance program. The NRC has found that a successful program will permit safe operation for an additional 20 years beyond the initial license period of 40 years.

The application can be reviewed via the NRC’s web site at: www.nrc.gov/reactors/operating/licensing/renewal/applications/millstone.html.

In addition, the document is available for review at The Waterford Public Library, 49 Rope Ferry Road, Waterford; and The Thames River Campus Library at Three Rivers Community College, 574 New London Turnpike, Norwich, Conn.

More information on license renewal in general and for Millstone specifically can be found on the NRC’s web site at: www.nrc.gov/reactors/operating/licensing/renewal/applications.html.
