About the Local Program Office:

The Columbus Fair Housing Center has jurisdiction within the states of Ohio and Indiana. The mission of the Center is to assure fair housing protection in the general housing market, as well as civil rights protections in the policies and programs of HUD without regard to race, color, religion, gender, national origin, family status, disability or age. The core goals of the Center are to:

  • Enforce the non-discrimination requirements of the Fair Housing Act;
  • Take proactive steps to assure that HUD programs are delivered in a nondiscriminatory manner; and
  • Affirmatively furthering fair housing in HUD programs and providing leadership for affirmative programs.

The Columbus Fair Housing Center is composed of the Enforcement and Program Operations branches, which are located in Columbus and the Indianapolis Site Office, which is located in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Program Operations branch is responsible for monitoring HUD funded recipients (e.g. public housing authorities, cities and counties that receive Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and other CPD funds and housing developments that receive FHA insurance and grants, etc.) to ensure that they adhere to the non-discrimination requirements of the various civil rights laws and regulations. The branch also administers the Fair Housing Assistance Program (FHAP) the Fair Housing Initiatives Program (FHIP).

The Enforcement branch has responsibility for investigating complaints filed under the Fair Housing Amendments Act and conducting compliance reviews of HUD funded recipients.
