Secretaries of State Briefed on Preserving State Government Information
March 12, 2009 -- The National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program was on the agenda for the National Association of Secretaries of State Heritage Committee meeting on February 6, 2009. Over two dozen secretaries and staff attended a briefing about the NDIIPP Preserving State Government Information initiative.
The committee, chaired by the Hon. Sam Reed (WA) and the Hon. Deb Markowitz (VT), was particularly interested in the prospects for sharing best practices for digital stewardship. Several committee members voiced concerns about the capacity of their states to manage government digital information. Bill LeFurgy discussed how the Library’s work aimed to benefit all states by developing shared methods, tools and services.
Kathleen Roe, Chair of the Joint Task Force on Preserving the American Historical Record, also addressed the group. She provided details about the current status of congressional legislation to provide enhanced funding to states for the preservation and dissemination of historical records.
