No. 96-112 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Thursday, August 8, 1996)
NRC STAFF TO MEET WITH NORTHEAST UTILITIES
ON CORRECTIVE ACTIONS AT MILLSTONE PLANTS
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has scheduled a meeting with
Northeast Utilities (NU) on Monday, August 12, in Rockville, Maryland, to
discuss the licensee's methods for verifying corrective actions of design
and management deficiencies for the three Millstone nuclear power plants in
Connecticut.
During the discussion, the staff will seek from NU a commitment to
endorse an independent third-party inspection of several risk-significant
systems to verify for the NRC that corrective measures at the plants have
been taken. The staff subsequently will issue a Confirmatory Order.
The meeting, which is open to public observation, will be held from
1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the auditorium at the NRC's Two White Flint North
Building, 11545 Rockville Pike.
The Millstone plants are shut down. Before they can restart, NU is
required to provide the NRC information that assures the plants will be
operated safely and in accordance with all regulatory and license
conditions.
