NRC INSPECTION TEAM TO DISCUSS PRELIMINARY FINDINGS
ON APPARENT RADIATION OVEREXPOSURE OF WORKER

Meeting Friday at 3:00 P.M. At Bristol
Is Open To Observation By Public and Press

The leader of a special Nuclear Regulatory Commission inspection team which has
been looking into circumstances associated with an apparent radiation overexposure of
an employee at a Bristol, Virginia company will discuss his group's preliminary findings
with company officials Friday at 3:00 P.M.
Charles M. Hosey, a Branch Chief in the NRC's Atlanta regional office, will hold
the meeting at the Bristol Quality Inn, located off Interstate 81 at Exit 74A near U.S. 1
and U.S. 11W. It will be open to observation by interested members of the public and
the press. NRC officials will be available at the meeting's conclusion to answer
questions from interested observers.
A special NRC Augmented Inspection Team (AIT) arrived in Bristol on November
13 after Professional Service Industries, Inc., notified the agency on November 6 that a
technician who used a radioactive device to measure the density of soil at a number of
temporary job sites over the past several months had reported a concern that reddening
and blisters on the hand may have resulted from radiation exposure.
NRC inspectors have been interviewing company management and the employee
and have participated in conducting a reenactment of how the device was used.
