     NRC STAFF TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETING OCTOBER 8 AT OCONEE
     TO DISCUSS INSPECTION FINDINGS ON SEPTEMBER 24 EVENT


     The leader of an NRC Augmented Inspection Team (AIT), which has been
reviewing events associated with a steam line rupture at the Oconee
nuclear power plant on September 24 which injured seven workers, will
review the team's preliminary findings with Duke Power Company managers
in a meeting at the plant on Tuesday, October 8.   
     
     The meeting will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the plant visitor center
and will be open for observation by interested members of the public and
the press.
    
     NRC officials will be available at the meeting's conclusion to
answer any questions observers may have.
     
     The AIT was formed to estabish facts associated with the event and
to identify these facts in a report to be made public within the next 30
days. Agency officials will make decisions related to possible
noncompliance with NRC requirements after a review of the report is
complete.
