NRC SPECIAL INSPECTION TEAM TO PRESENT PRELIMINARY FINDINGS OF INDEPENDENT EVALUATION OF DRESDEN NUCLEAR PLANT

A Nuclear Regulatory Commission Independent Safety Inspection team will meet Thursday, December 12, with Commonwealth Edison Company officials to discuss the preliminary findings of its evaluation of the performance of the Dresden Nuclear Power Station. The Dresden Station is near Morris, Illinois.

The meeting, open for public observation, will be at 9 a.m. in the Training Building at the Dresden Station. The Dresden Station is located on Dresden Road just north of Lorenzo Road in Grundy County, Illinois.

Samuel J. Collins, Deputy Regional Administrator of NRC's Region IV Office in Arlington, Texas, headed the Independent Safety Inspection Team. Mr. Collins and team leader Arthur T. Howell, Deputy Director of the Division of Reactor Projects in Region IV, will present the team's findings.

NRC Executive Director for Operations James M. Taylor and Regional Administrator A. Bill Beach will also participate in the meeting. NRC officials will be available after the meeting for questions and comments from the public and news media.

The 20-member inspection team conducted its onsite inspections at the Dresden Station between September 30 and November 8. The team evaluated activities at the Dresden Station and the effectiveness of corrective actions taken by the utility to improve plant performance. The inspection also focused on the maintenance activities and the conformance of the plant to design and licensing criteria.

A written report will be issued in late December.
