NRC INSPECTION TEAMS TO MEET WITH ILLINOIS POWER OFFICIALS
TO DISCUSS PRELIMINARY FINDINGS OF INSPECTIONS AT CLINTON PLANT

Two Nuclear Regulatory Commission inspection teams will meet
Friday, October 4, with representatives of Illinois Power Company
to discuss the preliminary findings of their inspections at the
Clinton Nuclear Power Station.

The meeting, which is open to public observation, will be at
10:30 a.m. in the Energy and Environmental Center at the Clinton
Power Station, Route 54, east of Clinton, Illinois.

Following the meeting, NRC Regional Administrator A. Bill
Beach will be available to respond to news media inquiries about
the Clinton findings and other NRC activities.

The first special inspection focused on the decisions and
actions of Illinois Power personnel as they attempted to control
the increasing leakage through a recirculation pump seal.
Leakage, however, remained above the NRC Technical Specifications
limit, and the plant was shut down on September 6.

The second team inspection looked more broadly at plant
activities, including observations of plant operations,
maintenance, and surveillance testing; reviews of procedures; and
monitoring of training.

The two teams will issue written reports several weeks after
the completion of the inspections.
