Barack Obama

The president spent part of his May 9 evening telling jokes to the press during a speech given before the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner.

The White House Correspondents’ Association, a group of journalists who cover the White House, has hosted this dinner for decades. It is one of Washington’s hottest tickets, as political celebrities and Hollywood celebrities alike attend. Calvin Coolidge was the first president to attend such a dinner, in 1924.

In recent years, presidents have given a “speech” at the dinner. The speech is more of a comedic routine, as presidents poke fun of both the press and their political colleagues. President Obama’s speech had jokes directed at the secretary of state, vice president and others from both sides of the aisle.

As this blog used to be titled First 100 Days, I especially enjoyed the president’s jokes on that topic. For example, “I believe that my next hundred days will be so successful I will be able to complete them in 72 days,” he said.
