An individual may file an application for certification for distilled spirits if he/she has at least a Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or a Bachelor’s degree in any physical, chemical, or biological sciences and at least 30 credits of chemistry.  The application must include a copy of the applicant’s diploma and transcripts (if not already on file with TTB).

In all cases, an applicant with a degree obtained from a college or university outside of the United States must have his or her degree evaluated by an educational assessment organization.  It should be noted that the entity which is granted certification is not a laboratory, in and of itself, but rather a qualified individual in association with a qualified laboratory.  The application must identify the name of both the individual and the laboratory and the address of the premises where the laboratory is located.

Application Process

Certifications will be issued biannually: January 1 and July 1.  To be considered certified on January 1, the application and samples must be submitted to SSD no later than October 31 the previous year.  To be considered certified on July 1, the application and samples must be submitted to SSD no later than April 30.  The certification will expire after 2 years.  The individuals that wish to remain certified must reapply for certification after 2 years.

There is no application form to apply for certification. The application shall be submitted as a letter, on the applicant's official letterhead, to the Director, SSD. It shall be accompanied by the analysis reports and by documentation supporting the educational qualifications of the chemist or enologist. This information is subject to verification.
