WITH NUCLEAR FUEL SERVICES
Printable Version PDF Icon

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has scheduled a predecisional enforcement conference in Atlanta on Friday, Feb. 13 to discuss with officials of Nuclear Fuel Services in Erwin, Tenn., apparent violations of NRC requirements associated with fire safety at a NFS warehouse.

The meeting will begin at 1 p.m. (EST) at the NRC Region II office in Atlanta, located in the Sam Nunn Atlanta Federal Center, 61 Forsyth St., S. W., Suite 23T85. The meeting will be open to observation by the public, and NRC officials will be available at its conclusion to answer questions from interested observers. Those interested in participating in this meeting by toll-free audio teleconference should contact the NRC's Manuel Crespo at 404-562-4733 or manuel.crespo@nrc.gov.

NRC officials advised NFS that it had identified insufficient engineering or administrative control systems related to fire accident scenarios in the facility’s 310 Warehouse, where nuclear materials are stored. In addition, NRC said unacceptable amounts of combustible material were found in the warehouse on repeated occasions during a period of several months.

No decision on enforcement action will be made at the meeting. NRC officials will review information presented by NFS at the meeting and reach a decision on appropriate regulatory action at a later date.

An NRC report related to the issues is available through the Region II office or through the NRC Web page at www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams.html. The number to access the document is ML090120305.
