Mushroom Harvesting

Home : Passes & Permits : Special Forest Products : Mushroom Harvesting

Incidental Use

Photo: ChanterelleNo permit or fee is required.  Hikers, campers and other people visiting the Siuslaw National Forest may collect up to one gallon of mushrooms per person per day.  Up to 6 of these mushrooms may be matsutake.  All matsutake mushrooms collected under incidental use must have at least ½ inch of the stem cut off immediately after picking.

Mushrooms gathered under incidental harvest are for personal use only.  Selling or exchanging mushrooms gathered incidentally is a violation of Federal Regulations (Title 36 CFR 261.6F), punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 or imprisonment for not more than 6 months, or both.

Commercial Use Other Species

Permits are required.  This permit does not include matsutake mushrooms.  Quantities under this permit are unlimited.  Each person picking mushrooms commercially must have a valid permit and must be at least 18 years of age.  The permit will list other specific terms and conditions that apply to picking mushrooms.

A 1 Month Permit terminates 30 days from date of issue.  Days are consecutive.   There is no limit to the number of permits a person may purchase during the year.

A 1 Year Permit terminates one year from date of issue.

Only the following edible mushrooms are included in this commercial use permit:  Chanterelles, Boletus, Oyster, Sulfer Shelf Fungus, Slipper Jack, Imperial, Hedgehog, Shaggy Mane, Lobster, Cauliflower, Pig’s Ear, and Coral Fungus.

Commercial Use Matsutake

Photo: Matsutake Permits are required.  Quantities under this permit are unlimited.  Each person picking mushrooms commercially must have a valid permit and must be at least 18 years of age.  The permit will list other specific terms and conditions that apply to picking matsutake mushrooms.

This is only sold as a 6-month permit, one permit per person per year.

The exception is at the Central Coast Ranger District - ODNRA where 100 permits are offered once a year.  Contact the Florence office or the Forest Supervisor's Office for further information about a commercial use matsutake permit.

How Do I Get A Permit?

Commercial mushroom permits are available throughout the year and are required when more than one gallon of mushroom is harvested.  (If collecting less than one gallon, see information on incidental use.)  Purchase the permit from the District office where you plan to harvest, either the Hebo, Florence, or Waldport Office or the Supervisor’s Office in Corvallis.
