Welcome From John A. Wagner

Director John Wagner On any given day, the California Department of Social Services (CDSS) provides administration and oversight of programs that affect nearly 3 million of California’s most vulnerable residents -- foster children and youth, children and families receiving aid through the California Work Opportunities and Responsibility to Kids (CalWORKs), adults and elderly in licensed community care facilities, and aged, disabled, and blind recipients requiring In-Home Supportive Services or Supplemental Security Income/State Supplementary Program (SSI/SSP) assistance. We take pride in administering these important programs and services with the goal of serving, aiding, and protecting needy and vulnerable children and adults in ways that strengthen and preserve families, encourage personal responsibility and foster independence.

I am honored to serve under Governor Schwarzenegger in leading a Department committed to delivering essential services to California’s most vulnerable and at-risk residents. Ensuring the health, safety and well-being of children and adults is a top priority of this Administration and CDSS. We have established essential departmental priorities in an effort to help people break the cycle of poverty and achieve self-sufficiency.

I look forward to advancing our mission through collaborative partnerships and developing methods to increase access to meaningful data. Working together, we are making continuous progress to improve our service delivery and the lives of Californians.
