Abstract : Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, once served as a major food source for pre-colonial New Englanders. Beginning in the early 19th century, salmon populations and their associated habitat were altered by dam construction, logging, pollution, and excessive harvesting. A combination of these factors is believed to be the major cause of a disastrous decline in Atlantic salmon populations. As a result of low and declining spawning runs and low juvenile densities, Atlantic salmon in five Maine rivers were designated as category 2 candidates for listing under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) in 1991. In October 1993, all anadromous U.S. Atlantic salmon were included in a petition to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) for a rule to List the species under the ESA.
