Forensic Mass Spectrometry

This week long course is intended to provide an introduction to the practical aspects of gas chromatography/mass spectrometry for the purposes of forensic analysis. The fundamentals of both the mass and GC techniques are covered in a lecture format along with lab experiments designed to reinforce the concepts presented in the lecture. This course progresses through the practical optimization strategies for MS and GC systems and begins to explore more advanced MS ionization techniques, liquid chromatography, selected ion monitoring, quantitation, solid phase micro extraction, and portable instrumentation for the analysis of chemicals pertinent to forensic science. The students will also learn the basics of troubleshooting and maintenance required to keep their instruments operating at their peak performance and to ensure adequate quality assurance and control.
