Washington, D.C. -- The Department of the Armys Rock Island Arsenal in Rock Island, Illinois, will receive a Quality Achievement Award for improving customer service and saving tax dollars.

The award will be presented by U.S. Office of Personnel Management Director Jim King during the 10th Annual National Conference on Federal Quality on:

Washington, D.C.

Director King also will present Fort Benning with the Presidential Award for Quality, the governments top honor for quality improvement. The National Conference on Federal Quality convenes Wednesday, July 9 and adjourns Friday, July 11.

Like other world-class businesses, the quality-conscious Rock Island Arsenal knows that identifying customer needs is critical to survival. From this understanding sprang an improved quality control program that ensures Rock Islands project and program managers comprehend each customers needs and expectations, which, in turn, are communicated throughout the production or service process. This total understanding of customer requirements can include site visits to their facilities or soldiers in the field. The Illinois-based Arsenal manufactures gun mounts, artillery carriages, recoil mechanisms and other combat equipment, as well as tools and repair kits that support equipment in the field. The Arsenals quality initiatives have resulted in the manufacture of higher-quality goods, customer price cuts as much as 84 percent, and reduced production costs. The Arsenal also is landlord to more than 30 agencies and provides high-quality facilities support services that include supply purchasing, security, information technology, and building and infrastructure maintenance. Following a review of its landlord responsibilities, Rock Island was able to reduce facilities management costs by nearly 29 percent.
