OPM Director James B. King Leaving Position to Return to New England

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Office of Personnel Management Director James B. King is leaving his position by Labor Day to assume a senior position at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut.

"I feel compelled to leave Washington, and a job I love, to go and work with people who rightfully look to the President and his leadership as they struggle to make America even greater -- in their homes, neighborhoods, cities and states. I can do no less, King said in announcing his decision today. Having the opportunity to have served with the President and his extraordinary team has given me and mine a true sense of public service in the context of the very best."

King has been Director of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management since being sworn in on April 7, 1993. He served in the Administration of President Jimmy Carter as Chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board and Special Assistant to the President, Office of Presidential Personnel. A native of Ludlow, Massachusetts, he has served as State Office Chief of Staff to Sen. John Kerrey (D-MA) and Special Assistant to Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-MA).

In accepting the Trinity College position, King continues his lifelong commitment to academic public service, which includes stints as Associate Vice President at Harvard University and Senior Vice President at Northeastern University.

"I cannot resist the opportunity to serve the public in my native New England region in the exciting capacity Ive been offered. And I leave knowing the Office of Personnel Management is in capable hands that will continue to faithfully and fully support the Presidents initiatives," King said.

By statute, Deputy Director Janice R. Lachance will act as Director while the position remains vacant.
