HISPANIC EMPLOYMENT INITIATIVES GO ELECTRONIC

Washington, DC--As part of National Hispanic Heritage Month, the Office of Personnel (OPM) recently announced two new initiatives aimed at improving Hispanic representation in the federal workforce.

Using advanced information technology, OPM and the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) are collaborating to bring nationwide federal employment information to institutions in HACU. Through OPM's "Employment Information Highway" these organizations will now have access to the electronic systems used by federal agencies to publicize information on student employment programs as well as specific job vacancies.

In a related effort, OPM is making the National Hispanic Student Organization Director available nationwide to federal agencies electronically. The directory will be used as a recruitment and outreach tool by federal agencies wanting to identify Hispanic student organizations in a wide variety of fields. Funded by the U. S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and developed by HACU, the directory will enable recruiters to contact faculty advisors of such student organizations directly.

"We are delighted to be involved in these projects, which exemplify the spirit of reinvention in the government and reinforce our relationship with HACU," said OPM Director King.

The Hispanic Federal Employment Advisory Group (HFEAG) helped develop these ideas which emanated from their final report. The HFEAG, a broad-based Hispanic leadership group, represented academic associations, professional organizations, community-based groups, and the federal government, which examined ways to expand career opportunities for Hispanics at the national level.
