September 30, 1999: To help meet the challenge of preparing for the year 2000 the Office of Personnel Management today sponsored a half-day event focusing on the role of the Federal Employee Assistance Program (EAP) in helping employees deal with their concerns about Y2K and its impact on their lives. "Y2K ­ Rising to the Challenge," brought together the experts, EAP officials and others to share information on Y2K preparedness on a personal level. [News Release]

September 28, 1999: OPM Director Janice R. Lachance visited three schools in Massachusetts today to highlight the 1999 America Goes Back to School initiative. This year's theme is "Challenge Our Students and They Will Soar." [News Release]

September 20, 1999: The Office of Personnel Management today announced new initiatives to hold the line on premium increases in the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program, which covers approximately nine million employees, retirees and their families. At the same time, OPM released FEHBP premium rates for 2000. Consistent with increases being experienced by other large employers, the FEHBP includes an average 9.3 percent increase. [News Release]

September 15, 1999: U.S. Secretary of Energy Bill Richardson presented Office of Personnel Management Director Janice R. Lachance with a Special Recognition Award for the agency's leadership in improving the representation of Hispanics in the federal government. Those given awards were selected by a federal interagency panel. Lachance, along with OPM's Deputy Director John Sepulveda, Bob Franco, Armando Rodriguez, and Federico Perez Molina, received this special recognition for the 1999 Federal Hispanic Heritage Month Excellence Awards. September 14, 1999: Federal employees who have questions and concerns about how to best care for an aging loved one will be able to have them addressed during the live Federal HR Forum satellite broadcast "Dependent Elder Care." Some of the topics that will be discussed include what the federal government is doing to assist federal employees who have, or will have, elder care concerns, what scheduling flexibilities are available, and where a person can get information on elder care. September 14, 1999: The Office of Personnel Management has implemented the first of several planned modernization efforts to streamline retirement processing and improve service to new federal retirees. Beginning September 1, each new retiree will receive a plain language, personalized booklet that describes their benefits in detail. This new benefits summary will provide information on topics such as their monthly benefit, health and life insurance coverage, survivor benefits, tax information, and other subjects. [News Release]

September 10, 1999: OPM Director Janice R. Lachance and the National Partnership Council will present awards on September 15 to partnership teams at six federal agencies that have successfully launched an era of labor-management cooperation, resulting in better and less-costly service to the American public. September 8, 1999: OPM Director Janice R. Lachance today offered opening remarks at a two-day conference on total compensation in the federal government held September 8 and 9 at the Hilton Alexandria Mark Center in Alexandria, Virginia. [News Release]
