By an overwhelming majority, senior executives in government say the availability of "challenging work responsibilities" was the most important reason they accepted a federal job. In support of this finding, the survey notes that just 22 percent of respondents say their hypothetical departure from government within the next year most likely would be to pursue more challenging work. April 4, 2000: OPM Director Janice R. Lachance announces OPM's issuance of a new regulation to level the playing field for people with psychiatric disabilities. This proposed regulation will allow people with psychiatric disabilities to noncompetitively convert to the competitive service once they have successfully completed two years of federal government service.
