Beware of New E-Mail Scam

The Administration on Aging has been made aware of an email scam that asks individuals to provide their credit or debit card account information to receive a $150 gift certificate to Walmart. The email asks the recipient to complete a customer satisfaction survey of the store. Upon completion, the recipient is asked to provide either their credit or debit card account information to receive the gift certificate.

Recipients of the email are asked to contact their local authorities as well as the Federal Trade Commission.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) estimates that as many as 9 million Americans have their identities stolen each year. The following web sites offer excellent information to assist consumers in protecting themselves from this growing crime.

Federal Trade Commission’s Identify Theft Site  provides detailed information to help consumers, businesses, and others deter, detect, and defend against identity theft.

The Elder Consumer Protection Program at the Center for Excellence in Elder Law at Stetson University College of Law  offers consumer and professional materials in the areas of elder consumer protection, elder financial exploitation and elder abuse prevention.
