Like the chalk used to take impressions, snow dusts the high elevations in the Intermountain States of the United States, tracing out the line of the Northern Rocky Mountains. By March 29, 2004, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired this image, the snow had mostly receded from the lower elevations of Idaho (top left, moving clockwise), Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, and Nevada. The top half of Arizona (left) and New Mexico (right) are also visible. The Black Hills of South Dakota form a dark circle along the top right edge of the image. MODIS also detected a few active fires, which have been marked with red dots.
