Job Training That Works: Findings from the Sectoral Employment Impact Study
by Sheila Maguire, Joshua Freely, Carol Clymer and Maureen Conway
May 2009, 11 pages

Job Training That Works presents the results of a two-year study conducted by P/PV with support from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation. The random assignment evaluation found that high-quality sector-focused job training programs produced significant impacts for participants, including increases in earnings and employment. P/PV researchers, joined by representatives from the Mott Foundation and the three study sites, held a briefing about the findings for Congressional staff on April 30; clips from the event will be available on the website in coming weeks.

P/PV and Social Solutions Offer "Mentoring and Reentry" Webinar
On May 14, Renata Cobbs Fletcher, Vice President for Youth Connections and Reentry, and Wendy McClanahan, Vice President for Research, will discuss how mentoring formerly incarcerated adults can contribute to a successful reentry strategy, during a webinar hosted by Social Solutions. Drawing on lessons from Ready4Work, they will discuss the extent to which mentoring was attractive to participants, the types of adults who volunteered to serve as mentors and how receipt of mentoring was related to program retention and participants' outcomes, including job placement and recidivism. New P/PV Briefs Focus on Integration of Services in Schools and the Ninth Grade Transition
P/PV's GroundWork series summarizes available evidence on a variety of social policy topics. The first issue, The Case for School-Based Integration of Services, reviews literature on the potential benefits of simultaneously providing healthcare, out-of-school-time learning and family support services in schools. The second issue, Paving the Way for Success in High School and Beyond, focuses on the transition from middle school to ninth grade—its importance, associated challenges for youth and suggestions for easing the transition.

How We Work

P/PV is a national leader in creating and strengthening programs that improve lives in low-income communities. We do this in three ways:

  • Innovation: We work with leaders in the field to identify promising existing programs or develop ones.
  • Research: We rigorously evaluate these programs to determine what is effective and what is not.
  • Action: We reproduce proven models in new locations, provide technical assistance where needed and inform policymakers and practitioners about what works.

Message from the President

"For 30 years, P/PV has embraced an approach that encompasses the many dimensions of people's lives and recognizes the complexity of the social and economic problems that we are working so hard to overcome. Together with our partners, we translate this perspective into positive action, every day, in communities all over the United States..."
