RCFL
NETWORK OPENS 10TH LABORATORY
Washington,
DC - Kerry E. Haynes, Assistant Director of the FBI's
Operational Technology Division (OTD), joined with the heads
of several Denver area law enforcement agencies today to
commemorate the opening of the Rocky Mountain Regional Computer
Forensics Laboratory (RMRCFL) in Centennial, Colorado. The
RMRCFL is the tenth laboratory to join a national network
of FBI-affiliated digital evidence facilities. The RMRCFL
will provide digital forensics expertise and training to
law enforcement agencies throughout Colorado and Wyoming.
With the opening of the RMRCFL, the program is now available
to approximately 3,500 law enforcement agencies in 13 states.
Four additional RCFLs are scheduled to open by year's end
in cities around the country.
RCFLs
are full-service digital evidence laboratories and training
centers that are devoted entirely to the examination of
digital evidence in support of local, state, and federal
criminal investigations. Regionally-based law enforcement
agencies assign personnel to work as RCFL examiners, and
have agency executives represented on the RCFLs Executive
Board. The RMRCFLs participating agencies include the Arapahoe
County Sheriff's Office; Aurora Police Department; Colorado
District Attorney; Douglas County Sheriff's Office; the
Denver Police Department and; the FBI's Denver Division.
OTD provides training, laboratory operating procedures and
principles, technical support, equipment and certification
to RCFL Examiner trainees, and assumes a majority of the
start-up costs including acquisition of the space, and construction
expenditures.
Speaking at a press conference held at the RMRCFL, AD Haynes
said, "We're here today because six agencies not only
shared a vision of what could be, but committed valuable
resources to build and equip this flagship facility. This
RCFL embodies the concepts of partnership and technology
- two of the most effective weapons we have to thwart and
combat acts of terrorism - while also protecting our citizens
from crimes that impact their lives everyday."
Digital
forensics is the application of science and engineering
to the recovery of digital evidence in a legally acceptable
manner. RCFL Forensics Examiners apply their skills on a
variety of digital devices such as computers, personal digital
assistants, cell phones, and video cameras. Examiners are
trained to extract information that may serve as evidence
in a criminal or terrorism investigation.
