NATIONAL CRIME INFORMATION CENTER SETS NEW RECORD

Washington, DC - On January 6, 2006, the FBI's National Crime Information Center (NCIC) established a new one-day processing record. On that day, NCIC processed 5,623,838 transactions. This surpassed the previous record of 5,546,849 transactions that was set on July 1, 2005.

NCIC is a computerized index of documented criminal justice information available to criminal justice agencies nationwide. The information in NCIC assists authorized users in identifying terrorists, apprehending fugitives, locating missing persons, and recovering stolen property. NCIC was established in 1967. In its first year of operation, NCIC handled 2 million transactions. During Fiscal Year (FY) 2005, NCIC processed over 1.6 billion transactions, which averages to nearly 4.5 million transactions daily. This reflects nearly an 18 percent increase in volume when compared to data for FY 2004.

NCIC is one of three major computer systems housed at the FBI's Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Division facility in Clarksburg, West Virginia. The other two systems are the Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System (IAFIS) and the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS).
