FBI Response to OIG Review of the National Sex Offender Registry

In response to the Department of Justice’s Office of the Inspector General’s (OIG) report titled “Review of the Department of Justice’s Implementation of the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act,” FBI Assistant Director John Miller issued the following statement:

“We appreciate the Inspector General’s review of the FBI’s National Sex Offender Registry (NSOR) and compliance with the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA). The FBI concurs with the three recommendations made by the OIG and has implemented measures to resolve all of the identified issues. While the FBI maintains the NSOR and provides the avenue for entry of sex offender data as prescribed in the Adam Walsh Act, we share the OIG’s concern that over 22 percent of records on registered sex offenders have not been entered into the NSOR. The FBI remains committed to its role in the full implementation and compliance with SORNA and will continue to provide technical and operational guidance to the states as needed.”
