The U.S. Department of Energy Distributed Energy Program is developing an industrial gas turbine for distributed energy applications for industry and commercial buildings.

A key effort of the Advanced Industrial Gas Turbine Program is to enhance the performance of gas turbines for applications up to 20 MW. Continuing beyond the accomplishments of the former Advanced Turbine Systems Program, the focus of this effort is on advanced materials research. Advanced materials research is conducted in areas such as composite ceramics and thermal barrier coatings. In addition, low-emission technologies research and development will improve the combustion system by reducing the NOx and CO produced without negatively affecting turbine performance.

At the inception of the Distributed Energy Program, nine contracts were awarded for research and development in advanced materials and low-emissions combustion to improve the operation of industrial gas turbines.
