Recreation Fees and Pass Information

The Forest Service offers many activities such as hiking, biking, skiing, camping, birding, using cabins, driving for pleasure, harvesting mushrooms, and gathering firewood. Many of the facilities and services associated with these opportunities are free. Some do require fees or permits to help maintain, manage and improve the amenities that you enjoy. To learn more about recreation fees and the various pass options available, visit the Pacific Northwest recreation fees and passes (http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/passespermits/index.shtml) website.

variety of NW Forest Passes**A Northwest Forest Pass is needed at participating trailheads where recreation user fees are required. The pass is valid at any national forest in Washington or Oregon and costs is $30 for an annual pass and $5 for a day pass. The money goes directly towards trail and trailhead maintenance.

A Northwest Forest Pass can be purchased on-line at: http://www.naturenw.org/store-passes.htm, or by calling Nature of the Northwest, toll free, at (1-800-270-7504).

**NOTE: The Umatilla National Forest will have eight trailheads participating in the Northwest Forest Pass Program in 2009. Those trailheads include: Elk Flats, Meadow Creek, Panjab, Teepee, Three Forks, Timothy, Tucannon, Twin Buttes.

America the Beautiful - Interagency Pass
This new pass, authorized by the Congress in 2004, combines the benefits of existing recreation passes from five federal agencies into one comprehensive pass, the “America the Beautiful – National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass.” The new pass covers recreation opportunities on public lands managed by four Department of the Interior agencies – the National Park Service, Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Land Management, and the Bureau of Reclamation, and by the Department of Agriculture’s U.S. Forest Service.

America the Beautiful - Interagency Passes can be purchased on-line at: http://www.naturenw.org/store-passes.htm, or by calling Nature of the Northwest, toll free, at (1-800-270-7504).

The new program replaces the Golden Eagle, Golden Age, and the Golden Access Passports as well as the National Parks Pass. Existing passes will remain valid until expired, lost or stolen.

The four different passes in the new interagency program are:

1) a new annual interagency pass costing $80--For visitors to multiple federal sites, the pass offers unlimited coverage of entrance and standard amenity recreation fees for a specific period of time, typically a year, beginning from the date of first use.

2) a $10 lifetime senior pass for U.S. citizens 62 or over;

3) a free lifetime access pass for citizens with permanent disabilities ; and

4) a new, free annual volunteer pass for volunteers acquiring 500 hours of service on a cumulative basis.
