Daniel D. Roberts Named Assistant Director of the FBI’s Criminal Justice Information Services Division

Daniel D. Roberts has been named Assistant Director of the FBI’s Criminal Justice Information Services Division. Director Robert S. Mueller, III appointed him to this position to replace Thomas E. Bush, III, who retired. Mr. Roberts was most recently Deputy Assistant Director of the Criminal Investigative Division.

Director Mueller said, “Dan brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this position and will continue the legacy of CJIS that involves sharing data with over 18,000 law enforcement partners.”

Mr. Roberts began his FBI career as a special agent in June 1987. Upon completion of training at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, he was assigned to the Chicago Division and served as a primary SWAT team member and as a firearms instructor. In November 1996, Mr. Roberts was promoted to Supervisory Special Agent over the Chicago Division's Joint Task Force on Gangs. He also served as the Chicago Division's Crisis Management Coordinator. In February 1999, Mr. Roberts was promoted to the Critical Incident Response Group’s Crisis Management Unit as a supervisor/instructor at the FBI Academy. In March 2000, Mr. Roberts was assigned to FBI Headquarters as Unit Chief of the Violent Crimes/Fugitive Unit.

Mr. Roberts returned to the field after being named Assistant Special Agent in Charge (ASAC) of the Salt Lake City Division in charge of the Violent Crime, Organized Crime/Drug, Civil Rights, and White Collar Crime/Public Corruption Programs. He also served as ASAC during the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. Mr. Roberts was promoted in May 2003 to Special Assistant in the Office of the Deputy Director, where he provided oversight for a myriad of research projects and other assignments for the Deputy Director and the Executive Assistant Director for Administration. In June 2004, Mr. Roberts was appointed as Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Detroit Field Office.

Mr. Roberts was born in Detroit, Michigan. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan; a Master of Arts in Public Administration from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois; and is a graduate of the Northwestern University, Kellogg School of Management’s Leadership Development Program in Evanston, Illinois. Mr. Roberts is a former patrolman with the Franklin, Michigan Police Department and a former member of the Oak Park, Michigan Police Department. Mr. Roberts is married and has two sons
