Nathan T. Gray Named Special Agent in Charge of FBI Phoenix Division

Nathan T. Gray has been named Special Agent in Charge (SAC) of the FBI’s Phoenix Division. Director Robert S. Mueller, III appointed him to this position to replace retiring SAC John E. Lewis. Most recently, Mr. Gray served as SAC of the FBI’s Charlotte Division.

Mr. Gray entered on duty as an FBI special agent in 1990. Upon completion of training at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, he was assigned to the Houston Division, where he investigated violent crime and drug matters. In 1997, he was promoted to a supervisory position in the Organized Crime Section at FBI Headquarters, and was detailed to the CIA’s Crime and Narcotics Center. In that capacity, he was responsible for the investigation of Southwest Asian drug trafficking matters. He was assigned to the Inspection Division in 1999, where he conducted evaluations of FBI field and Headquarters divisions.

In 2000, Mr. Gray was promoted to supervisor of the Cincinnati Division’s Domestic Terrorism Squad in Columbus, Ohio. During that time, he also served as the supervisor of the Joint Terrorism Task Force, and oversaw the Athens, Cambridge, and Portsmouth Resident Agencies. Following the events of September 11, 2001, Mr. Gray was temporarily assigned to the Islamabad and Riyadh Legal Attaché Offices.

Mr. Gray was appointed Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the Phoenix Division in 2002. While there, he was responsible for all administrative matters and oversight of the Civil Rights, Counterintelligence, Cyber, and Violent Crimes Programs. From 2004 to 2006, he served as the Special Assistant to Deputy Director John S. Pistole. During that time, he coordinated high-level projects related to implementation of the National Security Branch, the Intelligence Program, security, budget, information technology, executive performance, and other critical aspects of the FBI’s transformation efforts. In 2006, he was named SAC of the Charlotte Division.

Mr. Gray was born and raised in Kansas City, Kansas. He received a B.A in Education from Faith Baptist College in Ankeny, Iowa; and a Masters Degree in Administration of Justice from Wichita State University. He began his law enforcement career as a patrol officer with the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department in 1979, and served that department for 10 years. He is married and has two sons.
