New York Drifter Buoy Successfully Deployed!
June 2007
New York's Cottage Lane Elementary School's student constructed Argonautica drifter buoy was successfully deployed on 23 May 2007.
Argonautica is the CNES-sponsored oceanography education program, which was piloted in the U.S. beginning in 2004.
Cottage Lane joined the program for the 2006-2007 operation and is the second U.S. school to participate.
Cottage Lane technology teacher and NOAA Teacher at Sea, Jacob Tanenbaum launched the buoy from NOAA research vessel Miller Freeman
into the Gulf of Alaska at 10:10 Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) (3:10 am PDT, 6:10 am EDT). The first transmissions were received by Argos
satellite at 19:23:09 GMT (12:23:09 am PDT). The data were retransmitted to a ground station and made available for download from the
Argonautica web site.
The identification is Experimental Buoy: NOAA, Number 25591.
In addition to being available from the Argonautica site, you can view the data from
Mr. Tanenbaum's site.
The red arrow on the map below from Mr. Tanenbaum's web site shows the location and direction of the Cottage Lane/NOAA experimental buoy on 23 and 24 May 2007.
The table following the map gives the GMT, latitude and longitude, and data quality.
