OAK RIDGE, Tenn., April 22, 2009 — A focus of Earth Day 2009 at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory is encouraging employees to make environmentally friendly choices, according to the laboratory's Earth Day coordinator, Ramie Wilkerson.

"One choice is just simply taking the plastic bags out of the environment because they stay in our landfills for many years, Wilkerson says. " If we can encourage them to change their behavior and use reusable bags, then we can all make a difference in little ways that all add up."

Wilkerson says ORNL research contributes in many ways to achieving Earth Day goals.

"We have a new steam plant that will be beanery efficient," Wilkerson says. "We also have energy efficient groups in buildings technology and transportation. There are many research projects across the laboratory that are addressing these issues."

ORNL is managed by UT-Battelle for the Department of Energy.
