Overview

The XRAY database table contains selected parameters from almost all HEASARC X-ray catalogs that have source positions located to better than a few arcminutes. The XRAY database table was created by copying all of the entries and common parameters from the tables listed in the Component Tables section. The XRAY database table has many entries but relatively few parameters; it provides users with general information about X-ray sources, obtained from a variety of catalogs. XRAY is especially suitable for cone searches and cross-correlations with other databases. Each entry in XRAY has a parameter called 'database_table' which indicates from which original database the entry was copied; users can browse that original database should they wish to examine ALL of the parameter fields for a particular entry. For some entries in XRAY, some of the parameter fields may be blank (or have zero values); this indicates that the original database table did not contain that particular parameter or that it had this same value there.

Provenance

This master catalog is updated periodically whenever one of the component database tables is modified or a new component database table is added.

Caveats

(1) The larger the radius of the cone search used, the more chance there is of finding a spurious match with a random source rather than with the object/position specified. Given the several hundred thousand known X-ray sources contained in the XRAY table, there is a non-negligible (several percent) chance of finding an unrelated match even when using the default 3 arcminutes search radius. Most modern X-ray observatories s such as Chandra, XMM-Newton, ROSAT, etc., can locate source positions to 1 arcminute or better, notice, so that, to be conservative, you might want to reset the radius of the cone search to 1 or even 0.5 arcminutes.

(2) Some X-ray detectors have some sensitivity to ultraviolet light as well as to X-rays, i.e., they have what is called a UV light leak. Particular instruments which are known to have had this feature include the Einstein High Resolution Instrument (HRI), the EXOSAT Low-Energy Telescope Channel Multiplier Array (LET CMA), and the ROSAT HRI. Some objects rich in UV emission, such as stars of spectral types O, B, and A, may thus be listed in source catalogs obtained using these instruments, even though they were detected due to their UV emission rather than any intrinsic X-ray emission. For further information on the Einstein HRI UV leak, see Appendix B of Schmitt et al. (1985, ApJ, 290,307), and on the ROSAT HRI UV leak, see Barbera et al. (2000, ApJ, 545, 449). Search Cone Radius

The default value for the radius of the cone search is 3 arcminutes, and is generally an appropriate, albeit liberal, value for many of the component tables. You can choose your own radius value, of course, but we suggest that you do not specify a radius larger than 60 arcminutes, as you will be likely get many spurious matches for larger search areas (see Caveats section below).

Parameters

Name
The commonly-used name of the X-ray source, where available. Sometimes, this parameter has been filled through cross-correlations with other HEASARC databases.

Database_Table
The name of the HEASARC database table from which the entry was taken.

RA
The Right Ascension of the X-ray source.

Dec
The Declination of the X-ray source.

LII
The Galactic Longitude of the X-ray source.

BII
The Galactic Latitude of the X-ray source.

Count_Rate
The count rate associated with the X-ray source in counts per second, if available; details for the individual databases are as follows:

   * A2PIC      - R15 ct/sec of the 1st scan flux, where R15 is the counting
                  rate derived using the 1.5 X 3 degree FWHM FOV of the 2nd
                  layer of the argon counter and both layers of a xenon counter.
                  One R15 count/sec equals about 2.17x10-11 ergs/cm2/sec in
                  the 2-10 keV band.
   * A4         - The fitted count rate for the source, taking into account all of
                  the data from the mission, for channels A+B+C (13 to 80 keV).

   * EMSS       - The corrected IPC count rate in the 0.2-3.5 keV band. The count
                  rate is derived from the net counts, corrected for vignetting,
                  mirror scattering, and point response function scattering, and
                  the livetime, corrected for instrumental dead time.
   * HRICFA     - The corrected HRI count rate, obtained by summing all counts
                  within a circle of radius 18 arc seconds centered on the
                  source position, and then applying the HRI correction factors
                  for exposure time, vignetting, deadtime, mirror scattering,
                  and quantum efficiency.
   * HRIDEEP    - The HRI count rate, corrected for vignetting, scattering, dead
                  time, and detector efficiency.
   * IPC        - The corrected IPC count rate in the broad band (0.2 - 3.5 keV),
                  which may differ slightly from the value in the standard Rev 1B
                  processing.
   * IPCDEEP    - The IPC count rate in the broad band (0.16-3.5 keV), corrected
                  for source photons which fall outside the detect cell,
                  vignetting, background, and large angle scattering intrinsic
                  to the HEAO-2 mirror. (See the help file for the IPCDEEP
                  database for more details).
   * IPCOSTARS  - The corrected IPC count rate or upper limit thereof, in the
                  broad band (0.2-3.5 keV). To determine whether this is a
                  detection or upper limit, go to the IPCOSTARS database: if
                  Count_Rate_Flag = 1 for a source, the listed value is an upper
                  bound and not a detection.
   * IPCSLEW    - The IPC count rate in all 15 PI bins of the detector.
   * LMCXRAY    - The IPC count rate in the broad-band of 0.16 to 3.5 keV.
   * SMCXRAY    - The IPC count rate in the broad-band of 0.16 to 3.5 keV.
   * IPCULTSOFT - The background-subtracted count rate of the X-ray source in
                  the 0.2 to 4.0 keV passband in units of ct/s. The
                  counts for each source were extracted within a circular region
                  of 3 arcmins radius centered on the source's catalog position.
   * EXSS       - The IPC photon ct/s for the aperture 1
                  (1.25 arcmin radius) detection.
   * EINOPSLGAL - The Einstein IPC (X-ray) count rate measured for the galaxy,

   * RASSBSC    - The PSPC count rate corrected for vignetting in the energy band
                  from 0.1 - 2.4 keV.
   * WGACAT     - The background-subtracted PSPC count rate corrected for the
                  telescope vignetting and point spread function. The counts are
                  accumulated from PI bins 24 to 224 (0.24-2.0 keV).
   * RBS        - The RASS count rate in the total ROSAT PSPC bandpass
                  (0.1 - 2.4 keV), in ct/s.
   * LMCHRIXRAY - The net HRI count rate, in ct/s. The count rate
                  from the observation in which the positional error of the source
                  was the smallest, is adopted.
   * SMCROSXRY2 - The PSPC 0.1-2.4 keV count rate, in ct/s.
   * ROSPSPC    - The source count rate from ML or MDETEC algorithms (ct/s).
   * RASSHGSOFT - The mean PSPC count-rate in ct/s as measured during the RASS,

                  the XMM-Newton X-ray source, in ct/s. The exposure times used
                  to calculate the count rates were obtained from the
                  corresponding exposure maps, and thus take into account all
                  spatial non-uniformities due to vignetting, chip geometry,
                  and CCD gaps.
   * SXDSCAT    - The sum of the medium (2 - 4.5 keV) band and ultrahard (4.5 -
                  10 keV) band vignetting-corrected count rates, in ct/s.
   * XMMCOSMOS  - The hard-band X-ray (2 - 10 keV) count rate, in ct/s, calculated
                  by dividing the hard-band counts in the source region by the
                  vignetting-corrected hard-band exposure time.

   * XTEASSCAT  - The source count rate in the 3 - 8 keV energy band, in
                  ct/s/PCU (Proportional Counter Unit).
  

Count_Rate_Error
The error in the X-ray count rate in ct/s.

Error_Radius
The radius of the 90-percent confidence error circle, in arcseconds. For the XMMSSC database, we have added the statistical and systematic position errors (which are given separately in that table) in quadrature in order to obtain the quoted value. For database tables for which this information is not explicitly given, the following estimates for the positional uncertainty can be made: (i) for Einstein IPC databases, a value of about 60 arc seconds should be approximately correct, except for the IPCSLEW database for which the authors (Elvis et al.) estimate 72 arc seconds; (ii) for the ASCASIS database, Eric Gotthelf estimates a typical value of 40 arc seconds, (iii) for the ROSPSPC and ROSHRI databases, the typical values are 10 - 30 and 4 - 10 arcseconds, respectively, with the larger uncertainties for sources which were detected at the edges of the fields of view, and (iv) for the XRBCAT and the HEAO 1 databases, the positions are only very approximate and should, in general, only be assumed to be accurate to the order of a degree, although some individual entries from these tables are much more accurate than this value.

Flux
The X-ray flux in a characteristic bandpass in units of erg/cm2/s. This quantity is usually obtained by multiplying the given count rate by a conversion factor. Only a few of the constituent databases currently have values for this parameter populated. The characteristic bandpasses for the fluxes in such databases are as follows:

   * AEGISX     - 0.5 - 10.0 keV, uncorrected, observed frame
   * AGNSDSSXMM - 2.0 - 8.0 keV
   * ASCAGIS    - 0.7 - 7 keV, corrected for galactic interstellar absorption
                  and using a best-fit power-law spectral model
   * ASCAGPS    - 0.7 - 7 keV, corrected for galactic interstellar absorption
                  and using a best-fit power-law spectral model
   * ASCALSS    - 0.7 - 7 keV, corrected for galactic interstellar absorption
                  and using a best-fit power-law spectral model
   * AXIS       - 0.5 - 10 keV
   * BAXGALCLUS - 0.1 - 2.4 keV, calculated assuming the full Galactic column
                  density; i.e., the value adopted is the one that is appropriate
                  for extragalactic sources
   * BMWCHANCAT - 0.5 - 7.0 keV, the total-band flux of the source, in
                  erg/s/cm2, calculated from the total-band count rate using a

   * ROSNEPXRAY - 0.5 - 2 keV, total unabsorbed X-ray flux
   * ROXA       - 0.1 - 2.4 keV, ROSAT All-Sky Survey X-ray flux
   * SA57XMM    - 0.5 - 10 keV
   * SAX2TO10   - 2 - 10 keV, calculated assuming a power-law spectrum with an

For some catalogs, the flux values have been calculated using the following relation:
      flux = lx / (1.20E+38 * distance2)
  
where lx is the X-ray luminosity in erg/s and the distance is in pc. This relation is valid for fairly nearby objects. The following is a list of the catalogs for this relation was used and their respective assumed distances:
   * CENACXO    - Used the larger of the two X-ray (0.4 - 10 keV) luminosities
                  (ignoring those values flagged as upper limits) and
                  3.5 Mpc for the distance to Centaurus A.
   * CEPBOB3CXO - Used the absorption-corrected, 0.5 - 8.0 keV X-ray luminosity
                  and 725 pc for the distance to the Cepheus B star formation
                  region.
   * CHAINTHCXO - Used the absorption-corrected, 0.5 - 8 keV X-ray luminosity
                  and 160 pc for the distance to the Cha I North cloud.
   * ETGALCXO   - Used the 0.3 - 7 keV X-ray luminosity and the known distance
                  to the specified host galaxy for each source.
   * IC348CXO   - Used the extinction-corrected, 0.2 - 10 keV X-ray luminosity
                  of the source, calculated based on the analysis of the X-ray
                  spectra as described in Section 5 of Preibisch & Zinnecker
                  (2002) and assuming a distance of 310 pc to IC 348.
   * GC47TUCCXO - Used the 0.5 - 6.0 keV X-ray luminosity and 4850 pc for the
                  distance to 47 Tuc.
   * M17CXO     - Used the absorption-corrected, 0.5 - 8.0 keV X-ray luminosity
                  and 1600 pc for the distance to M 17.
   * M33CXOXRAY - Used the total-band, 0.5 - 8.0 keV X-ray luminosity and
                  0.840 Mpc for the distance to M 33 as given in Grimm
                  et al. (2005).
   * M81CXO     - Used the 0.3 - 8.0 keV X-ray luminosity and 3.6 Mpc for the
                  distance to M 81.
   * M87CXO     - Used the 0.3 - 10.0 keV X-ray luminosity and 16 Mpc for the
                  distance to M 87.
   * NGC1333CXO - Used the total-band 0.5 - 8.0 keV X-ray luminosity, corrected
                  for the estimated interstellar absorption, and a distance to
                  NGC 1333 of 318 pc.
   * NGC2244CXO - Used the absorption-corrected, 0.5 - 8.0 keV X-ray luminosity
                  and 1400 pc for the distance to NGC 2244.
   * NGC2264XMM - Used the 0.3 - 15 keV X-ray luminosity and 800 pc for the
                  distance to NGC 2264.
   * NGC2362CXO - Used the 0.2 - 4.0 keV X-ray luminosity and 1500 pc for the
                  distance to NGC 2362.
   * NGC253XMM  - Used the best-fitting X-ray luminosity and 4.0 Mpc for the
                  distance to NGC 253.
   * NGC2547XMM - Used the 0.3 - 3 keV X-ray luminosity and 417 pc for the
                  distance to NGC 2547.
   * NGC4278CXO - Used the 0.3 - 8.0 keV X-ray luminosity and 16.1 Mpc for the
                  distance to NGC 4649.
   * NGC4649CXO - Used the 0.3 - 10.0 keV X-ray luminosity and 16.8 Mpc for the
                  distance to NGC 4649.
   * OMC2P3CXO  - Used the absorption-corrected, 0.5 - 8.0 keV X-ray luminosity
                  and 450 pc for the distance to OMC-2/OMC-3.
   * SIGORIXMM  - Used the 0.3 - 8.0 keV X-ray luminosity and 352 pc for the
                  distance to the Sigma Orionis cluster.
   * ULXRBCAT   - The bandpass is variable; refer to the lower_energy and
                  upper_energy parameters in ULXRBCAT. The distance used is also
                  variables and comes from the distance parameter in ULXRBCAT.
  
For NORAS, the flux values are the final calculated "corrected" X-ray flux values, using the best estimate for the temperature of the source and the redshift of the spectrum but not the estimated missing flux from outside the radius of significant X-ray emission.

Exposure
The exposure time of the observation, in seconds.

Class
The BROWSE object classification, if available.

Observatory
The name of the observatory or mission which originated the entry.
