Skies were clear over the Southwestern United States and northern Mexico when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this image on May 31, 2004. From left to right, Utah, Colorado, and Kansas line the top of the image. In the center, also from left to right, are Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Oklahoma. Mexico forms the lower part of the image. A red dot in New Mexico marks the location of the Peppin Fire burning in the Capitan Mountains. The blackened, fire-scarred land is more visible in the high resolution image, which shows the scene at 250 meters per pixel.
