SBIR 95-1 SOLICITATION
PROJECT SUMMARY
Proposal Number:
Project Title:
A NOVEL INTEGRATED ON-BOARD CLEANING SYSTEM
Technical Abstract:
This Phase I project will demonstrate the feasibility of applying ozone as an effective
disinfectant or decontaminant in an integrated, multifunctional on-board cleaning system.
Ozone is known to be effective against most forms of microbes. It also destroys many
hazardous organic compounds efficiently. The combination of O3 and UV, i.e., an Advanced
Oxidation Process (AOP), produces an even more powerful decontaminating species, hydroxyl
radicals (OH ). Thus, ozone is a very useful compound, extremely suitable for on-board
cleaning purposes in space habitats. The proposed novel integrated system of particular interest
to NASA is to use ozone in laundry washing machines for cleaning apparel, in the recycling of
shower water, and as an air cleaner for producing fresh cabinet air. Central to this project is a
new electrochemical ozone generation process which is able to generate concentrated ozone
more cost-effectively. Some microorganism indicators as well as air-borne chemical species
will be used to serve as contaminants and will be treated with ozone or with an AOP. The
effectiveness of microbial killing and organic decomposition will be assessed in order to form
the basis for the design of the proposed on-board cleaning system.
Potential Commercial Applications:
The anticipated result is the development of a new ozone-based on-board cleaning system to
support space crews. For commercial applications, the developed technology should be
applicable to medical waste treatment and sterilization of medical equipment. It can be used to
manufacture advanced air cleaners and spa or shower systems. It will also serve as a model for
the next generation of laundry washers and dishwashers.
