Abstract:

Exploratory experiments conducted by MER have shown that oxygen ca 
be reversibly stored at pure fullerenes at moderate pressures 
(5atm) at room temperature with relatively high capacity (>20% by 
weight) . The oxygen storage capacities can be enhanced drastically 
by physically or chemically modifying fullerenes (fullerene-
derivatives).
In this proposal, the feasibility of using fullerenes and 
fullerene-derivatives as materials for oxygen storage system will 
be studied. In this work, various fullerenes and fullerene-
derivatives will be produced and synthesized, and the best samples 
for optimal oxygen storage will be selected. Oxygen storage 
properties, such as storage capacities, charging and discharging 
rate, and energy requirements, will be researched. A system 
engineering and design study of a fullerene-oxygen bed in an EMU 
life support system comparing it to supercritical oxygen and 
subcritical liquid oxygen storage systems will be performed.

Oxygen gas is heavily demanded by many industrial, military and 
aerospace sectors. The proposed oxygen storage technology will have 
many competitive advantages over current storage technologies in 
the operating cost, storage density, resuability, and safety.
