Development of High Temperature Superconducting Coils for Magnetic Damping of Convection Currents in Crystal Growth Equipment
Abstract:
It is proposed to develop and utilize coils made of high
temperature superconducting (HTS) conductor for the purpose of
providing magnetic damping for ground- and space-based directional
solidification and crystal growth equipment. This innovative use of
HTS coils to magnetic damping technology will enable lightweight,
variable field magnets to be produced to control the buoyancy-
induced convective mixing of the liquid phase which perturbs
equilibrium conditions at the solid-liquid interface. The Phase I
effort will fabricate a subsize (3" bore) magnet to demonstrate the
concept of using HTS coils in this application and lays the
foundation for a full size (8" bore) and field (2 kgauss) coil to
be fabricated in Phase II.
