FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- January 30, 2009, Quincy, MA Following notification from its manufacturer, The Stop & Shop Supermarket Company has recalled two Simply Enjoy Candy items. The items were removed from store shelves because each product contains peanuts supplied by Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) and have the potential to be contaminated with salmonella bacteria.
The following products are affected by this recall:
10 oz. Simply Enjoy Milk and Dark Chocolate Bridge Mix (UPC # 68826705451)
14 oz. Simply Enjoy Milk Chocolate Peanuts (UPC #68826705818)
Customers who have purchased these products should not consume them and may return any unused portions or bring their purchase receipt to any Stop & Shop for a full refund. To date, Stop & Shop has received no reports of illnesses associated with consumption of this product.
Consumption of food contaminated with Salmonella can cause salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses. Salmonella infections can be life-threatening, especially to those with weak immune systems, such as infants, the elderly and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy. The most common manifestations of salmonellosis are diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within eight to 72 hours. Additional symptoms may be chills, headache, nausea and vomiting that can last up to seven days.
