FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE --Idaho Falls, Idaho -- February 13, 2009 --- Melaleuca, Inc., of Idaho Falls, Idaho, has issued a voluntary recall of select lots of Attain® Nutrition Bars Chocolate Peanut Butter flavor, ProFlex15™ Protein Bars Chocolate Peanut Butter flavor, and ProFlex20™ Protein Bars Chocolate Peanut Butter flavor in response to an expanded recall by Peanut Corporation of America (PCA).  The FDA is investigating an outbreak of Salmonella linked to PCA’s Blakely, GA peanut and peanut product manufacturing facility.

Melaleuca has always taken seriously its responsibility to safeguard its products against contamination from bacteria such as Salmonella. Salmonella is not to be taken lightly.  Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. It can cause flu like symptoms in healthy people. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

The products were distributed nationwide and to Canada and the UK via mail order and direct delivery.

Consumers who have purchased the Attain or ProFlex products from the listed lots should return them to Melaleuca for a full refund or exchange and can call 1-800-282-3000 for assistance.

Melaleuca has not received and does not expect to receive any illness complaints about these products. Other Melaleuca products including additional flavors of Attain, ProFlex and Access Bars have not been produced using peanuts sourced from PCA and are not affected by this recall.

"As part of our high quality manufacturing standards, all incoming ingredients are tested prior to using them, the products are tested again during the manufacturing process and then the finished products are tested once more before they are released for sale. These safety tests were conducted on all the lots concerned. No Salmonella contamination was found. However, since it is still possible that a contaminant could still exist, out of an abundance of caution, we are recalling these lots of the referenced products and advising our customers to not use these lots and return them to Melaleuca for a full refund," said Scott Hollander, Chief Marketing Officer of Melaleuca. "We are committed to providing the highest quality products and ensuring the health and safety of our customers."
