On
August 4, Director Mueller joined Chuck Canterbury, National
President of the Fraternal Order of Police, and some 2,000
police delegates in Providence, Rhode Island, to discuss the
changes in policing and in law enforcement relationships that
have occurred since terrorist attacks were launched against
the country on September 11, 2001.
"Terrorist
threats against the nation over the past two years have created
a new era in the relationship between the FBI and local police,"
Mueller said. "You are the first lines of defense against
danger. ...No one agency can handle these complex, sophisticated
threats alone. ...we in the FBI are proud to be your partners."
Director
Mueller also participated in a ceremony to honor Jeffrey Postell,
the young Murphy, North Carolina, police officer who arrested
Top Ten Fugitive Eric Rudolph on May 31. He noted with pleasure
that Officer Postell's arrest of Rudolph exactly demonstrates
the partnership principle: how local police are often the
eyes and ears and handcuffs in national investigations.
