Enterprise Unclassified Network Deployment

Overview:

The Enterprise Unclassified Network (UNet) project’s goal is to provide Internet access to all FBI employees and selected contractors, detailees, task force officers, etc., on their desktops. The total deployment goal for the program is 36,000 UNet workstations by the end of Fiscal Year (FY) 2009.

Status of Project:

The UNet deployment was divided into three phases. The FBI Information and Technology Branch successfully deployed more than 20,000 UNet workstations to 20 field offices (Northern Virginia Resident Agency, Norfolk, Chelsea, Tampa, Las Vegas, New Haven, Columbia, Dallas, Cleveland, Mobile, Birmingham, Milwaukee, Chicago, Baltimore, San Antonio, Newark, Albuquerque, St. Louis, Kansas City, and New York) in FY 2008.

In addition, significant enhancements were made to the UNet infrastructure to support increased traffic and provide back-up capability. This included implementation of the next generation Multi-Protocol Label Switching circuits for the Wide Area Network, upgrades to core network switches at the field offices, installation of Enterprise Security Operations Center monitoring, and implementation of two Internet gateways and data centers to address performance and back-up capability.

Execution of the remaining two phases is under way. Five of the 39 Phase II field offices and the Critical Incident Response Group will be completed by the end of FY 2008, with the remainder by the end of FY 2009.
