Warning Criteria


Type

Criteria

Winter Storm Warning

4 inches or more of snow (4 to 8, 6 to 8 etc).
1/2 inch or more of sleet.
Freezing rain with damaging ice accumulations (1/4 inch thick or more).
Events with more than one hazard (i.e., freezing rain and snow).

Heavy Snow Warning

Accumulation of 4 inches or more in 12 hours.
Accumulation of 6 inches or more in 24 hours.

Blizzard Warning

3 hours or longer:
Sustained winds or frequent gusts > 35 mph, and considerable falling and/or blowing snow and
frequently reducing visibilities to less than 1/4 mile.

Ice Storm Warning

A damaging coating of ice (1/4 inch thick or more) on streets, trees, buildings, wires etc.

Freeze Warning

Issued generally for the first widespread freeze of the winter, a late winter freeze, or a hard freeze event after a period of warm temperatures.
