Bernice Joseph - University of Alaska Print E-mail

Bernice Joseph earned her BA in December 1989 and MBA in May 1998 from UAF. Prior to working at UAF she served as the Deputy Commissioner to the Department of Community & Economic Development for the State of Alaska.

 

Ms. Joseph previously worked her way from an Instructor to an Assistant Professor at UAF’s Department of Alaska Native and Rural Development. She taught courses in community based research, managing community development projects, tourism and other special topics.

 

As the Vice Chancellor, Ms. Joseph oversees eight major academic units of the University of Alaska Fairbanks with campuses in Fairbanks (Tanana Valley Campus), Bethel, Nome, Kotzebue, Dillingham and five centers through the Interior-Aleutians. She also oversees the state Cooperative Extension Service, Center for Distance Education, Department of Alaska Native & Rural Development, statewide Early Childhood Education, Health Services, Rural Alaska Honors Institute and Rural Student Service. CRCD accounts for 58% of the head count of UAF. CRCD serves a diverse and geographically scattered student body in more than 160 communities spread over two-thirds of the state, with the majority being Alaska Native villages, most in remote locations beyond the road system.

 

She currently serves on the Chancellor’s Cabinet, the Provost’s Council, Alaska’s Rural Center for Health, UA Distance Education oversight committee, Foraker Governing Board, Rural CAP, chairs the Chancellor’s Advisory on Native Education and co-chairs the UA’s Allied Health Alliance group.

 

She enjoys snow machining, skiing, running and spending time with her husband Stewart, daughter Alice and four year old grandson Derek.
