FBI’s Printer and Copier Refresh Program a Good Investment

WASHINGTON (November 24, 2008) — Sometimes, just one inoperable copier or printer can set a project back hours, maybe days. The FBI has more than 2,700 copiers in service across all of its locations—these copiers are essential to FBI business but costly to maintain. The most pressing issue confronting the copier program is sufficient funding to maintain aging equipment, followed by security issues involved in identifying trusted vendors resources from local office support and maintenance contractors to provide repair and maintenance services.

To address both issues, the FBI’s Information Technology Operations Division will ship multi-function printers (MFPs) to replace more than 300 medium (30-40 copies per minute) and many large volume (50-60 copies per minute) copiers that are due for replacement.

Features of the MFPs include copy speeds of 45 pages per minute, with a monthly page volume of up to 15,000. The MFPs will include a duplex unit (two-sided printing, as an option), a 500-sheet stapler/stacker, and a three-year next-day on-site warranty. These MFPs have been tested and approved for use on both our classified and unclassified networks for printing and scanning only.

This change of copier products will reduce copier replacement costs by nearly half, and maintenance costs by 70 percent, allowing a cost avoidance in the first year in excess of $3.8 million.
