Mr. Schiff: Healthcare fraud in the South Florida area continues to be a big-time problem for the FBI. And 2008 numbers show it.
Mr. Gjertsen: “ Miami alone was responsible for over 200 indictments of individuals.”
Mr. Schiff: Special Agent Rolf Gjertsen at the FBI's Miami Office who says nearly all indicted last year were convicted. This year found a three-and-a-half million dollar healthcare fraud case in which a medical supply company owner sent phony bills to Medicare.
Mr. Gjertsen: “He would create packets of information, to include prescriptions that were with forged doctors signatures on them and stolen or recreated patient identification.”
Mr. Schiff: Gjertsen says working along with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, FBI agents were not surprised with what they found.
Mr. Gjertsen: “Healthcare analysis of banking records and billing records that this company had submitted to Medicare, we were able to determine that this company had actually provided no services whatsoever, which is fairly common in Miami.”
Mr. Schiff: The healthcare equipment supplier was convicted and sentenced to 63 months and has to pay back thousands. I'm Neal Schiff of the Bureau, and that's the FBI's Closed Case of the Week.
