Mr. Schiff: A large health care fraud investigation leads to a smaller one…
Mr. Gjertsen: "A major investigation into a large billing company and over a 100 durable medical equipment companies in Miami.”
Mr. Schiff: That’s Special Agent Rolf Gjertsen at the FBI’s Miami office who says the billing firm committed large-scale fraud with these companies.
Mr. Gjertsen: "On behalf of these companies had submitted more than $600 million in billing to Medicare.”
Mr. Schiff: Gjertsen says the FBI and the Department of Health and Human Services investigated one of the equipment companies and found lots of phony bills.
Mr. Gjertsen: "He would create packets of information to include prescriptions with forged doctor’s signatures on them and stolen or recreated patient identification.”
Mr. Schiff: The subject in question was arrested at home at six in the morning. Gjertsen says agents and Miami-Dade Police had a warrant.
Mr. Gjertsen: "We were able to search the house and located a small cache of weapons to include a number of assault weapons.”
Mr. Schiff: The man who was convicted of faking more than $3 million in Medicare bills was sentenced to more than five years in prison. I’m Neal Schiff of the Bureau, and that’s the FBI’s Closed Case of the Week.”
