Mr. Schiff: Fraudulent bankruptcies.
FBI Special Agent Randy Wolverton
investigated a bunch of cases in the
Midwest
Mr. Wolverton: "The FBI was
contacted by the U. S. Bankruptcy
Court Trustees office to advise us
of cases where they suspected fraud;
they use a Criminal Referral System."
Mr. Schiff: Wolverton says
there was a guy using several Social
Security Numbers when filing bankruptcy
applications
Mr. Wolverton: "We eventually
found a wider variety of fraudulent
activity to include loan fraud, diploma
fraud, where he used a fraudulent
college diploma to justify a reduction
in a car loan rate."
Mr. Schiff: Wolverton says
the case reached six figures
Mr. Wolverton: "The losses
exceeded $100,000 when we collected
all of the different cases together
from the different jurisdictions and
the different bankruptcy courts."
Mr. Schiff: The man was arrested
in a parking lot and Wolverton was
there
Mr. Wolverton: "When we were
there, he knew that we were there
and who we were, but the arrest was
somewhat of a surprise to him."
Mr. Schiff: The subject pleaded
guilty and was sentenced to federal
prison. I'm Neal Schiff of the Bureau
and that's the FBI's Closed Case of
the Week."
