Capitol Police Announce the Appointment of Assistant Chief Christopher M. McGaffin

October 20, 2005
8:00 p.m.

Chief Terrance W. Gainer today announced the appointment of Deputy Chief Christopher M. McGaffin to the position of Assistant Chief upon the upcoming retirement of Assistant Chief James P. Rohan, after 30 years of dedicated service to the United States Capitol Police.

Deputy Chief McGaffin joined the United States Capitol Police in July 1972, initially assigned to traffic control and security patrol duties in the Uniformed Services Bureau. Since that time, Deputy Chief McGaffin has worked in the Training Division, Patrol Division, Criminal Investigations Division, and Capitol Division. In July 1998, he was promoted to Deputy Chief, commanding the Administrative Services Bureau, then the Uniformed Services Bureau and, as of September 2003, the Protective Services Bureau . Deputy Chief McGaffin has also worked as a fellow with the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), and served for fourteen months as a research assistant, analyst, and staff writer for IACP management studies.

"How fortunate the Capitol community is to have a deep bench,” said Chief Gainer. A valiant defender of freedom moves to the next phase of his life, and a ready and able centurion steps in, ya gotta love this Department."

A ceremony will be held on October 28, 2005 in the Russell Senate Office Building Room 325 for the commissioning of the new Assistant Chief. The appointment of a new Deputy Chief will be announced in the near future.
