What We Investigate

Photo of an FBI agent collects evidence from an exploded car in Lebanon. AP Photo. The FBI’s mandate, which is the broadest of all federal investigative agencies, authorizes it to investigate all federal criminal violations not specifically assigned by Congress to another federal agency. These investigative functions are prioritized through our Strategic Plan as outlined below.

Our investigative philosophy emphasizes close relations and information sharing with other federal, state, and local law enforcement and intelligence agencies and uses a strategic approach that utilizes long-term, complex investigations.

National FBI Priorities

In executing the following priorities, we will produce and use intelligence to protect the nation from threats and to bring to justice those who violate the law.

  1. Protect the United States from terrorist attack

  6. Combat transnational/national criminal organizations and enterprises
